The Style Word: 5 Minutes With Hardwear

New Scottish designer label Hardwear launched their debut collection last month. The brand is headed by Holly Baxter and Matthias McGregor, and we sat down to ask them some quick questions...

When & why did you want to work in fashion, and then do so by starting your own label?
Hardwear started as a combination of reaction & research. We were sick of the laziness of the high street, the tired & unethical business model of importing a thousand white t-shirts from a sweatshop abroad and digitally printing a rectangle on the front. Leafing through source books of Japanese designs we noted the opportunities that opened up if you screen-printed by hand onto rolls of fabric. This developed into the idea of creating something that was designed, printed, made & embroidered locally and from there we built a concept; that Hardwear would be MADE IN WILD WEST GLASGOW.

The road to starting your own label and getting it to retail can't have been an easy one. What were some of your greatest aids?
Our central goal from the outset was to source and make locally. The greatest help has been all the amazing creatives & models who helped us launch. We couldn't believe it when we counted up all the people who'd helped us, it was more than 40!

What was your inspiration for this collection?
Matthias travels part of each year working as an International Project Manager for an engineering firm in South America & Australia. The Hardwear aesthetic is a combination of things that he has seen & sketched. and then Holly has refined into workable designs using her knowledge of clothing construction & advanced pattern drafting techniques.

Is there a season you prefer to design for, and why?
We're a very young brand, so we're building up our collection by releasing new products on the first of every month. We loved all the dusty dusty pink we saw in the LFW shows so that's what we're currently drawing from. We're right this minute making patterns for some gorgeous pink boiled wool we found in Glasgow!

Is there any celebrity you'd particularly like to see wear your clothes?
We've been very happy to have two different musical acts ask for items to wear on-stage and in photo shoots: the first is Glasgow's own Honeyblood who wore Hardwear for the Brighton Great Escape festival last week, and the second is a big star currently touring the US but our lips are sealed at the moment! We'd love to dress some of our favourite groups- like electro duo The Knife. Oh and maybe Kraftwerk will want some matching outfits for playing T in the Park!
