Top Ten Feelgood Films

The weather is turning from Summer into a rainy Autumn; so why not settle down inside to one of these feelgood films...

Feelgood Films

1)    It's a Wonderful Life!

To quote Phoebe from Friends "It just kept getting worse and worse, it should have been called, 'It's a Sucky Life' and just when you think it can't suck any more it does." This film is the ultimate feel good movie and this is mainly because it drags you down so much that you can't help but feel uplifted by the end. A great story about love, solidarity and also a great one for making you feel grateful for what you have- this will easily make every "top 10 feel-good list" you will ever see.

2)    About a Boy

This is a cute, weird and hilarious film starring Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult and based on the novel by Nick Hornby. The story follows serial  womaniser Will (Grant) and his strange friendship with 12 year old Marcus (Hoult). It's a great story about friendship being found in different places- you will love the two lead character's interactions and the way they almost 'grow up' together.

3)    The Princess Bride

What's that? You've never seen The Princess Bride? Where have you been?! Great for kids and grownups, this is a fairytale that doesn't take itself too seriously and has a cast that will have you wetting your pants. Plenty of fantasy elements, humour and melodramatic characters really help you fall in love with this film- so if you are in a silly mood and want a feel-good movie with a little bit of everything in it, then this is the one.

4)    Billy Elliot

Set in 1980s Newcastle, England during the miner's strike, this is a gritty yet beautifully uplifting film about an 11 year old boy that aspires to be a ballet dancer. A great soundtrack along with some superb performances from Jamie Bell, Julie Walters and the rest of the supporting cast makes this is truly inspiring movie.

5)    Pretty Woman

I think everyone knows the premise of this film, but if you don't, I can sum it up in just 8 words; a lawyer falls in love with a prostitute. This is one of those films that seems utterly ridiculous but at the same time you can't help rooting for the characters and a happy ending. A great rom-com with wit and humour; this is definitely one to watch if you're feeling down.

6)    Shawshank Redemption

In the brutal setting of the fictional Shawshank prison, this film takes us on a journey of friendship, human spirit and teaches us about even so called 'criminals' having humour, wit and huge hearts. Following Andy Dufresene (played by Tim Robbins) and his emotional journey through his life sentence, this is a film that will make you laugh, cry and cheer.

7)    Dirty Dancing

The classic 1950s setting with plenty of 1980s music thrown in there, this is a romantic and cute story that leaves you feeling great about life and love at the end of the film. A story about young love and the concept of growing up, everyone whether they are man or woman, cannot help falling in love with Patrick Swayze!

8)    Cool Runnings

This film based is loosely on a true story about the first Jamaican bob-slay team, and is a true feel-good film. With larger than life, loveable characters as well as John Candy's perfect comic delivery; this is a great choice for all ages.

9)    Up

If you don't cry in the first ten minutes of this film, you are made of stone. A truly uplifting and moving Disney Pixar animated film that tells a beautiful story about love, friendship and loyalty which will melt your heart but also have you laughing out loud.

10)   Four Weddings and a Funeral

A bit of a cheesy, but classy, British movie; this is a classic Richard Curtis creation with plenty of silliness, moving moments and hilarity thrown in. Hugh Grant again makes it onto my list as Charles, a man whose previous relationships seem all doomed to failure with a strong group of friends and a mysterious American love interest. You will laugh, you will cry and you will be utterly confused by Charles' famous declaration of love.
