Ideal Alpine Winter Breaks


When we picture a Winter scene or the perfect Christmas atmosphere, there aren't many of us who aren't seeing a snowy alpine image in their heads. Think rustic wood cabins, log fires, cheese fondues, sleigh rides and white-topped mountains. Winter breaks in Austria, Switzerland or Germany will give you a traditional festive experience like no other. Here are our picks of where to head...

Mösern near Seefeld, Tyrol, Austria

This historic village is tucked away in the alps and is full of family hospitality. It's also an ideal base with which to hit the ski slopes. It is known as the 'peace village', and has a historic chapel and a good selection of traditional Austrian restaurants. It is perfecting for a relaxing break.

Zuoz, Switzerland

A hotspot for cross-country skiing, Zuoz is a historic stone-built village. It is close (by train) to the glamourous St.Moritz; plus you can take a train through the alps, over 196 bridges, to Italy on the Bernina Express. Zuoz offers plenty of opportunities for Winter activities such as sleigh-rides and toboganning, and has all the amenities you will need- in the form of a grocery shop, a bank and a post office. All the houses are painted in pretty colours. It is the perfect base for sightseeing.

Oberstaufan, Bavaria, Germany

This town is part of the alpine area in Southern Germany. It's full of quaint streets and narrow lanes with shops selling traditional German clothing and food. Being a town, it has a lively nightlife scene with plenty of wine bars and live music. The variety of restaurants is vast too; from traditional to modern. This is the perfect choice for those who get bored easily.
