Stylish Stay: Malmaison Dundee, Dundee

Malmaison Dundee Reception
After a watery start (the hotel was due to launch end of 2013 but flooded), Malmaison Dundee finally opened its rather stylish doors in Spring 2014.

In keeping with the decadent, quirky and dark Malmaison chain's theme, the Dundee establishment uses deep purple velvet fabrics, faux fur blankets, dog lamps and Dennis The Menace artwork.

Malmaison Dundee Staircase
During the renovation, they discovered a hidden ornate spiral staircase, which now is the main architectural showpiece of the hotel.

Malmaison Dundee Suite Bedroom
Malmaison Dundee has 86 rooms, 4 suites and 1 super suite. We stayed in one of the suites, and it was a very comfortable experience.

The suites have Scottish pioneers artwork above the beds; while the rooms feature Dundee's own Dennis The Menace. All rooms have Malmaison's excellent fig-scented toiletries, free wifi, extensive mini bar and access to a great room service menu from the hotel's brasserie.

Malmaison Dundee Brasserie
We dined in the brasserie itself. They have one of the well-known Josper grills installed- the perfect way to cook meat and vegetables to give an authentic charcoal taste and finish. Our steaks came perfectly cooked, and full of flavour.

The fries were crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, and our side of grilled mushrooms went perfectly.

For a starter, we had tempura vegetables with a sweet chilli dip. The batter was beautifully light and crisp. I'd definitely recommend this, as the portion is huge and excellent value for money.

If you feel you don't have room for dessert, you need to wait a while and find some, as their Raspberry Creme Brulee is not to be missed. It was a delightfully large portion, and once i'd cracked through the crunchy sugar top, the custard was perfectly creamy and sweet. We also tried the sticky toffee pudding which had an excellent caramel sauce, and the pudding itself was moreish without being stodgy.

Discovery Point, Dundee
It is an exciting time for the city of Dundee. Extensive renovations are under way- there will be a new train station, and a hugely updated waterfront with the arrival of the V&A museum in 2017. Malmaison Dundee is right in the heart of the action, and just a short stroll away from all of the major cultural interest points- the Dundee Science Centre, Discovery Point and the Dundee Repertory Theatre.
